When we have a “closet full of clothes and nothing to wear” we know we’re mixing clothing style. If we had a consistent style then those clothes would work well together. We would have fewer clothes in the closet and many more mix and match combinations.
How do we get into this situation?
New clothing styles come into fashion every season and we all want to freshen up our wardrobes; we look at what is new in the stores and pick from what is available. Often times, what was popular last season does not coordinate with the new fashion trends, so we accumulate clothes that don’t work well with one another. It is expensive for us, and it is profitable for the clothing manufactures because we buy more just to get something to wear.
How do we fall into this trap?
We get lazy. We let others define our style and blindly follow fashion. We don’t take the time to figure out our body’s architecture and what works with it. Our style lies in our bones (bone structure), skin and hair coloring. Are we straight lined or curved? Are we big boned or small? Are we creamy skinned, pink, cinnamon colored, or mahogany dark? What do we love and what do we not love? We pull this all together to identify our type and then we create our style.
Imagine a building with distinct architecture like “modern” and then hang Victorian curtains in it. It looks a little off. The curtains ruin the line and style of the architecture. It’s the same with us…Our “style” celebrates our best qualities, and camouflages our least desirable remaining true to our body’s architecture.
Our Style needs to be based based on our body’s architecture, our skin, hair color and textures. And it needs to be consistent with all the major pieces in our wardrobe. If we want to get a little wild we do it with the accessories or just a few fun pieces every once in awhile. But if we focus on our unique “Style”, rather than “Fashion” we build a consistent wardrobe that meets our needs and is easy to wear ~ not to mention we look great ~ whatever the fashion trend.
