After four days of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice, students finally get the chance to work through an entire color consultation—start to finish—with practice clients!
The fifth day of training at Mary Lou Manlove’s ColorInsight Studio in San Mateo is when everything comes together.
The workshop room is bright with natural light streaming through the front windows, perfect for accurate color assessment. The hum of conversation fills the space, and each student sits at her own work table, ready to begin.
The Real-World Test
They start with initial observations, carefully noting skin undertones, eye patterns, and hair color. Then come the palette exercises—layering color after color watching for the subtle changes that reveal the most flattering tones.

Mary Lou and Darren at Their Side
Even though this is the students’ moment to shine, they’re not alone. Instructors Mary Lou Manlove and Darren Chappell circulate the room, observing quietly, stepping in with guidance when needed, and offering tips to refine technique.
It’s an encouraging environment—part workshop, part performance, part fun!

Finding the Perfect Palette
Once the best colors start to emerge, students move into palette-building—selecting and arranging the exact shades that will form their client’s personal color guide. Every choice is intentional.
Here, theory meets intuition. The training’s structured methods blend with the student’s growing confidence, and the results are often met with smiles, nods, and “Wow, I can really see the difference.”

The Client Reveal
The best moment of the day? The reveal. Students hold up the finished palette, explain how to use it, and watch as their “clients” see themselves through new eyes. There’s genuine excitement when someone realizes a particular shade makes them glow.

Confidence in Action
For Teréz Autrand and Corey Calter, this is their first time running the full consultation from start to finish. For returning student Jenny Bailey, it’s a chance to refine her skills and pick up nuances she missed the first time.
The difference between Day 1 and Day 5 is remarkable—movements are smoother, observations sharper, and confidence unmistakable.

An Atmosphere That Elevates Learning
The studio’s expansive, light-filled front room is more than a classroom—it’s a working color analysis space. Each student has her own area, free from distractions, allowing for a true client-focused experience.

Students work with their clients in a bright and roomy sunlit studio environment, an ideal space for holding private color training consultations.
The Support Doesn’t End Here
Even after the week wraps up, the training continues with four follow-up sessions. Students bring their early client experiences to discuss challenges, refine skills, and celebrate successes. It’s a built-in safety net that turns new graduates into confident practitioners.
