Fashion is a Product – Style is a Process

“Fashion is a Product.
Style is a Process.”

Out of the mouth of a husband, words of wisdom sometimes flow.

But you have to admit he is right.
He has been hearing me talk about clients, women and clothes for such a long time.
And he came up with this statement, which I think is very insightful.

If we follow fashion blindly, we end up with a closet full of everything that is “in.”
But does the “in” fashion, work for us?

Fashion is a Product

If we screen the upcoming fashion through our filter of “what looks good on me”,
We have the possibility to create something wonderful that makes us feel
“pretty, beautiful, radiant or striking etc.” (Pick your word to describe your individual beauty).

My friend and branding genius, Susan Schwartz, of “You Who Branding” has a phrase
U got 2 B U
(You got to be You)

I believe we have a deep need to be “seen.”
Seen for what we believe in.
What is important to us.
Why we love.
Why we live.
And where we are willing to spend our effort.
U got 2 B U

Style is a ProcessYou actually know what looks good on you.
You are naturally drawn to it. So how do you stay connected to what fuels your style without becoming a slave to fashion?

Here are some simple steps to help you connect to your true style:

Simply match “like with like.”
1) Make a list what you love & what you hate (use this list as a guide) stick with what you love and the rest will follow. Get rid of what you hate and everything in-between.
2) Find yourself in color and repeat those colors in your clothing. Repeat the color of your eyes, hair (natural color hair),  the undertone of your skin and your overall color quality.

If you do not know these colors, try the eye test:

  • Hold up a color sample near you eye
  • Stand in front of a mirror
  • Close your eyes… rest a moment
  • Open and close your eyes
  • What do you remember?
  • Your eyes or the color of the sample? If you remember your eyes then the color supports your eye-coloring. Wear it when you want to have people like you. “When you wear colors that are close to your eye color, people TRUST you. Those colors give you a CREDIBLE and APPROACHABLE appearance.

Finding your Essential Style is a process, it may take time, but the rewards are lasting. Fashion comes and goes like the tides. It is always changing and demanding that we follow its lead. Learning to honor your unique body design and creating style that honors your essential beauty is an undertaking that pays off in both self-confidence and in a wardrobe that works for you – regardless of the fashion trend of the moment.
