I like my money where I can see it — hanging in my closet.”
~ Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City
When it comes to dressing – what are you more interested in? Creating lots of outfits or looking slimmer?
Well, you can do both at the same time if your clothes buying strategy includes investing in “Clothing Units.” Investment is the key ~ Purposefully buying items that are the same color or tints & tones of that color. It is called tone-on-tone dressing. And it’s very chic!
These “units” can look boring at first, however, the tone-on-tone is very slimming. They are the backbone of your wardrobe and the base on which everything else hangs; the perfect blank slate on which to show off your one-of-a-kind signature pieces. Your accessories, shoes, jewelry and everything etc, is what spices them up.
When you invest in groups or units of clothing with the same or similar tone you will not only look put together and have many possible combinations, but you will also look slimmer. Why is that? because repeating the same color in an outfit creates flow and the one of a kind accents draw the eye to what you want people to see, your eyes, your beauty or just you. Become a magician with clothing and have your audience see what you want them to see by having a good “unit” base on which to build your illusion.
Here are a few examples of units for the plus size woman from Neiman Marcus: On the left a Marina Rinaldi shimmer blazer and jacket, and on the right, a fun crinkle-sheen jacket, slim bootcut pants and jersey tank from Eileen Fisher.
The price tags may seem high, but when it is time for you to invest, spend money on quality foundation pieces for you; the right colors, cuts, and style. It’s important to buy these individual pieces all at once, the good stuff sells out quickly. This investment will help you in the long run. Wear it often and love it, because it loves you!
