What To Wear To A Photo Shoot

A photography magazine has invited me to share advice on what to wear to a photo session. More and more, people are having professional head-shots taken for their work, dating, or, for a personal avatar. Here is some advice on what to wear to look your best.

Advice to the model:

Take the camera seriously. You are responsible for what the camera sees, and what you choose to wear conveys a message about you. Are you friendly? trustworthy? fun? Your clothing is a huge part of your branding. It should be chosen carefully and with an eye for how it complements you, to help you look your very best.

What to wear to a photo session:

1) Portrait or head shot

Waist and above is all that matters…..

• Rule # 1. Pay attention to color. Never wear a white, whiter than the whites of your eyes.

• Rule #2. Find something that makes your eyes pop. The exact color of your eye, or a highlight within. Whether it’s on you or in the background.

• Rule #3 Choose a neckline that balances your face; the neckline should compliment your jaw line. A pointy or angled jaw looks better in a v-neck, while a round or oval face requires a softer neckline.

• Rule #4 Make sure everything is the right fit, not too big especially in the shoulders, and not too tight or low-cut.

• Finally: Test an outfit before the photo shoot. Take a few test shots from your home phone camera to check your whites, your eyes, your neckline, and the fit. Ask a trusted friend or advisor for feedback.

• The best plan always has a back-up plan; bring an alternate outfit with you! One that has been well thought out and tested!

Are you feeling overwhelmed? I can work with you select the clothing and accessories to make your photo session a success!
